So you have been bestowed the honor of Best Man. Now, it is time to learn how to live up to the title. Here are 4 responsibilities every best man must remember, and must do very well in order to ensure that the Bride and Groom’s big day is as perfect as possible:
Tux Deluxe
Unless the groom is a fashionist-o, he probably consults the bride or females in his life about what to wear. While the bride may have some input on the styles and colors of the tuxedo-wearing wedding party members, the ultimate responsibility is yours. The bride wants to see the groom in his glory for the first time at the altar. This means you are in charge of organizing fittings, giving advice, and making sure that the groomsmen’s tuxedos compliment the groom’s.
Two Rings to Rule It All
It’s your responsibility to guard and protect the rings. You may remember the episode of Friends where Joey’s duck eats Ross’s ring. Don’t let that be you! They are the single most significant pieces of jewelry the couple will ever own. Choose a secure box, a secure place away from animals and children, and leave them there until the absolute last moment. If you want to shine as best man, have the rings cleaned and polished for the couple just before the wedding.
Work Hard, Play Hard
You also get to plan the bachelor party! The plans should fit the groom’s interests and the bride’s wishes. (Do not plan for strippers unless you are absolutely positive that both are okay with it). Fit the plans to everyone’s budgets to include as many of his buddies as possible. The one place to splurge is on class transportation, such as a limousine service. Stay sober enough to make sure the groom has fun but doesn’t do anything he’ll regret.
The Speech
The most important thing you will do on wedding day is give your speech. This is the most difficult responsibility for many best men. Your responsibilities are endless, but these four take the most planning and effort. Being the best man is an honor and a privilege. It’s a lot of work, but with plenty of rewards!
