Getting married is going to be awesome wherever you go. But sometimes getting married in your hometown just isn’t enough. You want to give the day an extra oomph. You want to combine the joy of a wedding with the magic of a vacation.
So what do you do? You get married abroad, of course! Here’s a quick guide that will help you do just that.
Location, location, location
This may be the toughest part of the entire process. Of course, I’m willing to bet that most people who have decided to get married overseas had already decided on a destination. But if you only know that you want to get married outside of your home country, then you need to work out where it is you want to go. Do you want to go somewhere famous for its romantic vibe? Places like Paris and Greece would be obvious examples. Or you could look for something really unique. Gorgeous Hawea Wanaka weddings can be planned in New Zealand. You can even get married in a hotel made of ice in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden!
Consider a wedding planner
People often forget that wedding planners even exist! There are loads of couples who probably could have taken a lot of stress off their shoulders had they decided to go with one. Of course, I definitely get the desire to plan everything yourself. But if you’re planning on getting married abroad, then I would probably advise against it. Trying to coordinate and book everything on your home turf is enough of a headache. But this is a different country we’re talking about, here! Consider hiring the services of a wedding planner who operates in your chosen location.
Make sure you’re on the right side of the law
Of course, wedding laws vary all over the world. That’s why it’s incredibly important that you do as much research as possible about your chosen destination and its marriage laws. There are still many countries or states out there that don’t allow for gay weddings, for example. That’s something you would probably find out about very quickly, though. You need to be looking even deeper than that to make sure all your needs are met. Don’t worry – if your marriage is valid in your chosen destination, it will likely to be valid back home.
Let your guests know waaaaaay ahead of time
Here’s a very tricky part! When you choose to have your marriage overseas, you could fairly be called out for making things awkward for your guests. Of course, it’s your special day, so you should be doing whatever you want to do. But do keep your guests in mind! It’s no good if you decide you’re going to go get married in, say, Japan and set a date for three weeks from now. Very few of your friends will be able to turn up! Make sure you give your guests a lot of notice. I’m talking over a year. And if there is any way you can help mitigate the travel costs for them, either personally or through wedding travel packages, look into it.
