But right now, he’s down on one knee, and you are delighted to say ‘Yes.’ Getting engaged is an exciting moment in life, but it also heralds the start of the biggest journey into event planning you have ever taken! Busy times are ahead, but first you need to make it official.
If you don’t have it already, start by shopping for your engagement ring. It’s something you are going to wear for a long time, even after your wedding day. You can choose from some designer engagement rings here, or pop into your local jeweler. Choose something that you like the look of, but try it on so you can feel the weight. If it’s not comfortable, you are less likely to enjoy wearing it.
Some couples prefer to announce their engagement at a party event. This will give you good practice in time for your wedding reception! Gather your closest friends and family members. You can then choose to reenact the proposal, or merely present your hand for everyone to see the ring. Of course, once it is announced, people will expect you to confirm a date pretty quickly.
Book your venues as quickly as you can. Most reception venues are also able to perform the wedding ceremony itself. This is not always the case because of the legal requirements of a marriage. Check the availability ties in with your preferred dates. Sometimes you have to change the venue or your date preference if they are booked up. You also need to apply for a license to marry several weeks in advance, depending on where you live. Check with your local government office or register office for details.
Even wedding dresses off the peg will require some altering before your big day. Start your rounds of the boutiques early. Always make an appointment so an assistant can help you to dress. Take a bridesmaid or your Mother with you for a second opinion, and to make it a fun day! You will also need a headdress or veil, lingerie, and shoes. The boutique often stocks these things too.
Once your invitations are starting to RSVP, you can make decisions about the catering. You will also need to order a cake, bouquets, centerpieces and a wedding car. There is a lot to do before your big day. Many brides engage a wedding planner to assist with these details. It certainly helps take the stress out of managing such a big event. Your Best Man and Maid Of Honor will take on the Bachelor and Bachelorette party details, although you may prefer some input!
On the big day, take your time to dress and enjoy your final morning as a single lady. Spend time with your family, and have your hair and makeup done at the salon. The bride is usually driven to the ceremony in the wedding car with her parents and maid of honor. The groom will be there waiting. Once the guests are seated, it’s time for your walk down the aisle, in the arm of your Father. Enjoy your beautiful day.
